Atelier Artist Questionnaire

This list of questions is an invitation to artists to share their experience and thoughts on matters such as creative process, artistic practice, aesthetic leanings, personal proclivities, protocols and frameworks, etc.

It’s a long list and none of the questions are compulsory. However, the more complete and detailed the responses, the more equipped we will be to capture the many facets of the artist that you are, and present you and your artwork in a thoughtful, nuanced and meaningful way. Please help us articulate the most accurate and compelling narrative of who you are and what your art has to say to the world.

  1. How did you get started on your artistic journey?

  2. Please describe your creative process from idea to finished artwork?

  3. How do you choose the subjects or themes for your artwork, and what significance do they hold for you?

  4. Which artistic movement from the past do you feel most connected to, and why?

  5. What role does emotion play in your art, and how do you convey it in your pieces?

  6. Tell us about your art practice: do you have any particular rituals that help you get in the creative mindset?

  7. If you had to use only one art medium for the rest of your life, what would it be?

  8. Please describe your toolkit: coding languages, software, non-digital tools, etc.

  9. Please explain how short-form generative art lends itself well to some of your current explorations.

  10. How do you deal with creative blocks or periods of low inspiration?

  11. Are there any recurring symbols or motifs in your work, and what do they symbolize?

  12. What role does the viewer play in your art, and what kind of reactions do you hope to evoke?

  13. What’s the most memorable reaction or comment you’ve ever received from someone viewing your art?

  14. If you could give your younger artist self one piece of advice, what would it be?

  15. Imagine your best artwork is the cover of a book: what’s the title, and what’s the story inside?

  16. How do you incorporate feedback or criticism into your artistic growth and development?

  17. If you could collaborate with any artist, living or deceased, who would it be and what would you create?

  18. Describe your dream studio or creative space. What elements would it include and how might these inspire your work?

  19. If your art could make a sound, what would it sound like?

  20. Please answer any other question(s) you wish had been asked.
